Carey Ott / Ain’t No Upside

In these days of crisis, the human race is learning to take solace in little things. Thus, with no agenda other than to make people feel better, Carey Ott and Gary Taylor wrote Ain’t No Upside (Livin’ on the Downside) . Performed by Ott in a straightforward, stripped-down style that renders it appealing to young and old alike, the song’s message is simple: cynicism gets you nowhere except miserable. It will be said that this song is 2008’s answer to Bobby McFerrin’s Don’t Worry, Be Happy. Simple as that song was, let us not forget that, at the 1989 Grammy Awards, Don't Worry Be Happy won the awards for Song of the Year, Record of the Year and Best Male Pop Vocal Performance.

The time is right for an anthem of cheer, something that children can learn to sing, seniors can hum, radios can play and pop-music aficionados can appreciate. Sometimes a song can be something to believe in. Ain’t No Upside (Livin’ on the Downside) is such a song.

Every era has had such a song. Think of Charlie Chaplin’s eternal Smile, or the pop longevity of High Hopes or The Sunny Side of the Street. Ain’t No Upside (Livin’ on the Downside) belongs to the same family as these other anthems of positive thinking. And the world has never had a greater need for just such a song. It’s the right song at the right time.
